When God made dry bones come to life.
If you’re following along and have a bible near by, now is definitely the time to grab it.
So we’ve all heard of Ezekiel right? There’s a whole book in the bible dedicated to him and HE wrote it. But does anyone actually know who he is?
Turn your bible to Ezekiel 1:1 (I use a Parallel bible that has KJV and NIV))
Before we read you should know a few things:
1. Ezekiel was educated and trained to be a Priest in the Kingdom of Judah.
2. When King Nebuchadnezzar invaded, Ezekiel was held captive in Babylon
3. God took care of Ezekiel, and eventually Ezekiel became one of God’s prophets
A prophet of God is someone who has been contacted (through dreams or visions) and selected by God to basically speak on His behalf and deliver the knowledge he gains to other people.
Verse 1:1 says
”In my thirtieth year, in the fourth month on the fifth day, while I was among the exiles by the Kebar River, the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God.”
So, when Ezekiel had his first vision he was 30 and it was around what we now call “April, 5th”
Considering he wrote the book of Ezekiel, he noted the visions down along with the date in a person journal.
In his first vision, he basically saw Heaven open, along with the Lord sitting on His throne. He then goes on to explain how captivating it was.
Fast Forward to Ezekiel 1:26 and 28
“26 And above the firmament that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone: and upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it.
27 And I saw as the colour of amber, as the appearance of fire round about within it, from the appearance of his loins even upward, and from the appearance of his loins even downward, I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and it had brightness round about.
28 As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness round about. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw it, I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of one that spake.
Read 28 nice and carefully.
Ezekiel literally fell on his face, which is the appropriate reaction to have when you’re meeting God, right?
So his first vision was PRETTTY vivid.
In chapter 3 verse 4, Ezekiel is called to spread His word to the Land of Israel, because at this time, Israel was being extremely rebellious and were ignoring God’s warning to get themselves together. (Ezekiel gives these examples: Ezekiel 14:1-6, Ezekiel 20:12-13, Ezekiel 20:16-17, Ezekiel 20:24, Ezekiel 22:3, Ezekiel 22:8)
Finally to the good parts!
Turn to Ezekiel 37:1-10 and give that a good read.
It is linked HERE if you want to here what it says exactly and you don’t have a bible.
Ezekiel has this vision where got took him into a valley of bones. He asks if these bones could come to life. I would’ve said no, BUT all things are possible with God. God raises the bones out of the ashes, provides them skin, hearts, tendons, and makes them whole again. An army from the ashes. He relates these bones by saying “Son of Man, these bones are the whole house of Israel” (Ez. 37:11)
A lot of people question Christianity because they think it’s all too literal when in reality its figurative.
Obviously God did not just bring people back to life. He was showing Ezekiel that if he GOES to Israel and BREATHES the breath of life into the people who have no more faith, he would surely have an army on his side of believers.
He was showing Ezekiel that if he follows the path that God is setting for him, he will not fail.
God was asking him, “Can a nation like Israel, who is so lost and drowning in their sins, really be brought back to Christianity and brought back to living by My Word?”
And God assure him that it could and it would. One today. Even if we’re still not there yet.
There’s a few good lessons here, but my favorite it to give life. We look around us every day and see people who don’t follow because they don’t believe. And, a lot of people don’t believe because they haven’t heard.
Let these bones symbolize your friends, co-workers, family, or even people you meet on your daily adventures. Let them know WHO your God is and WHAT he can do.
Step into the valley of dead hearts and dry bones and use God’s word as the oxygen to breath that breath of life back into them. Understand that reaching out to fill someone with this awesome knowledge does not always mean they will take it with arms wide open and that’s okay because you did what you were sent to do and that is between that person and OUR God. Don’t let the rejection affect whether or not you choose to continue to spread the word. Call out to those people like you are trying to find all the men and women you can for a war. Because that’s exactly what we’re doing.
Ezekiel is an AWESOME book to look into. Some other visions in Ezekiel will be listed below! If you have a study bible, there may actually be a list somewhere around this chapter that has a list of Visions and Dreams seen by Ezekiel, along with other prophets.
The lesson itself became pretty self explanatory, but I hope and pray you learned something by reading this. Now that you know the back story, go check out Come Alive (Dry Bones) by Lauren Daigle and fall in love with it like I have. (click the song title)
This link is actually a worship video but it is SO powerful.
Thank ya’ll so much if you took the time to read and follow along, or even just read. God has blessed me in so many ways and He’s only getting started with me.
Let me see an army rise.
